Chicago Climate Exchange Approves FORECON EcoMarket Solutions’ Forestry Project Using ImageTree’s ForestSense Platform Technology

First CCX forestry carbon offset project using LiDAR remote sensing and CIR imagery, with ground truthing to establish carbon baseline

FALCONER, N.Y., May 26, 2009 —The Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) has approved a FORECON EcoMarket Solutions (EMS) forestry carbon offset project that deploys the ImageTree ForestSense technology platform, which combines remote sensing, field inputs, automated software and advanced mathematics to provide a comprehensive view of a forest, capturing every visible tree crown.

As an approved CCX aggregator specializing in forestry projects, FORECON EMS has developed a process to convert the results of an ImageTree comprehensive, crown-based inventory of a forest to a format compatible with its TIGER growth modeling and carbon accounting solution, explained Matt Smith CF, ACF, director of Ecosystem Services at FORECON EMS. This process, he said, was conceptualized around a 13,000-acre plot of land in the Eastern United States to facilitate project accounting using a CCX-approved G&Y model.

“With the acceptance of this project, FORECON EMS has added advanced technology to its options for landowners,” said Smith. “While CCX approves projects on a case-by-case basis, this has certainly paved the way for a new methodology that can be used to establish carbon baselines for forest properties anywhere in the United States.”
